With Apple Pay, you can easily make secure, contactless payments in-store, online, and in apps using iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro. You can also use it to pay for your Apple services and other subscriptions.

Apple Pay works in over 90 countries and regions worldwide. And when you use Apple Pay, you even get the same bank and fraud protections that you do with your physical debit or credit card.

Apple Pay works at over 85% of US retailers and anywhere contactless payments are accepted — from gas stations to restaurants, grocery stores, and more. Just double-click the side button on your iPhone or Apple Watch and tap the Contactless Symbol on the reader to pay.

Apple Pay is also accepted on millions of websites and apps. Just tap the Apple Pay button at checkout and skip the lengthy checkout forms.

Apple Pay is more secure than a physical credit or debit card because Apple Pay uses advanced protections built into your Apple device's hardware and software — including Face ID, which is designed so only you can use it to authenticate purchases.

Additionally, Apple tokenizes your card number and sends a unique code to merchants for each purchase, so your actual card number is never shared with merchants.

Apple doesn't retain transaction information that can be tied back to you. And your data isn't sold by Apple to third parties for marketing or advertising.

With Apple Pay, you will still earn all your credit card's points and rewards for every transaction, just like you would if you paid with your physical card.

Apple Pay supports a large network of banks globally, with new banks added regularly. If your card isn't supported yet, contact your bank for more information.

Apple doesn't charge users for making purchases with Apple Pay in stores, online, or in apps. Remember, you're just using a digital version of your physical card.

Your card issuer may still apply their usual charges or fees, but Apple itself doesn't charge users for making purchases or change how your card works — it just makes it more convenient to use.

Apple Pay uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip in your device to securely connect with a store's payment terminal. So making purchases is easy no matter where you are.

Even when you're not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service, your purchase will still process. However, your purchase may not show up in your transaction history until you reconnect to Wi-Fi or cellular service.

Apple Wallet keeps your credit and debit cards, ID cards, transit passes, boarding passes, tickets, keys, order-tracking details, and more — all in one place.

Apple Wallet is a secure way to store multiple payment methods. It's designed so that only you can access your personal information and verify purchases.

Additionally, Apple Wallet allows passes, tickets, and, in some cases, credit or debit cards to automatically sync across your Apple devices when you're signed into the same iCloud account.

The first credit or debit card you add becomes your default card, but you can easily change it anytime.

How to change your default card on iPhone:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Touch and drag the card you want to set as your default to the front of your card stack.

You can easily change your default card on Apple Watch anytime using your iPhone.

How to change your default card on Apple Watch:

Step 01: On your iPhone, open the  app.

Step 02: Tap My Watch, then tap Wallet & Apple Pay.

Step 03: Tap Apple Pay Defaults, then choose a card.

You can easily change your default card anytime in System Settings.

How to change your default card on Mac:

Step 01: Open (or System Preferences).

Step 02: Click Wallet & Apple Pay.

Step 03: Click Default Card, then choose a card.

When your default card appears, you can easily choose another card before completing your purchase, right at checkout.

Double-click the side button on your iPhone or Apple Watch, tap the cards at the bottom of the screen, then select the card you want to use. Your default card stays the same unless you change it in the Apple Wallet app.

Send money to family, friends, or others using your Apple Cash balance, or by setting up a debit card to add funds.

How to send money from Messages using Apple Cash:

Step 01: Open an existing conversation in Messages.

Step 02: Tap , then select Apple Cash.

Step 03: Enter the amount you want to send and tap Send.

Step 04: Double-click the side button to pay and authenticate your payment with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

To send Apple Cash, you'll need a balance on your Apple Cash card or a debit card that's already set up with Apple Pay.

Once you've set up a debit card in Apple Wallet, you can add funds to your Apple Cash balance.

How to add funds to your Apple Cash balance:

Step 01: Open the app and tap your Apple Cash card.

Step 02: Tap , then select Add Money.

Step 03: Enter an amount, then tap Done or the checkmark.

Step 04: Double-click the side button to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

When checking out online or in apps, you can review and update your information before you confirm your purchase.

How to update your contact at checkout:

Step 01: Tap "Contact" on the payment sheet.

Step 02: Select a phone number and email, or tap Add Phone Number or Add Email Address. Then tap Done or the checkmark.

How to update your shipping address at checkout:

Step 01: Tap "Deliver to" on the payment sheet.

Step 02: Select an address, or tap Add Shipping Address. Then tap Done or the checkmark.

Once everything looks right, confirm your purchase.

When your iPhone has a low battery, Power Reserve Mode keeps iOS running in order to support Express Card transactions.⁵ So you can still use your payment or transit card designated as an Express Transit Card, or Access Cards with Express Mode enabled.⁶ This is because Power Reserve Mode keeps the NFC chip active after your iPhone needs to be charged, allowing Express Mode to continue working without unlocking your device.

When your iPhone has a low battery, press and hold the side button to display a low-battery icon and a message that reads "Express Cards are available." Just hold your iPhone near the reader and you'll feel a vibration confirming the transaction.⁷

How to enable Express Mode for a card, pass, or key:

Step 01: Open the app and select a card, pass, or key.

Step 02: Tap , then tap Card Details.

Step 03: Tap Express Transit Settings and select your preferred transit card, payment card, or compatible pass or key.

How to set up Apple Pay on iPhone:

Step 01: Open the app on your iPhone.

Step 02: Tap .

Step 03: Tap Debit or Credit Card, then tap Continue.

Step 04: Hold your iPhone to the middle of the back of your physical card. Keep it in place until the card is read, or tap Enter Card Details Manually.

Step 05: Verify your information with your bank or card issuer. This might include receiving a text, answering security questions, or confirming through your bank's app.

How to set up Apple Pay on Mac:

Step 01: Open System Settings and select Wallet & App Pay on your Mac. On Mac models with Touch ID, go to System Settings (or System Preferences).

Step 02: Click Wallet & Apple Pay.

Step 03: Click Add Card and follow the steps on the screen to add a card.

How to set up Apple Pay on Apple Watch:

Step 01: Open the app on your iPhone.

Step 02: Tap My Watch, then tap Wallet & Apple Pay.

Step 03: Add your card.

To add a new card or a previous card: Tap Add Card, then follow the steps onscreen.
To add a card stored on your iPhone: Tap Add next to the card.

How to update your billing information:

Step 01: Open the app, tap a card.

Step 02: Tap , then tap Card Details.

Step 03: Tap Billing Address.

If you use Apple Pay for recurring or preauthorized payments — such as subscriptions, monthly bills, or installments — they will all be available to view in the Apple Wallet app.

How to view preauthorized payments:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Tap , then tap Preauthorized Payments.

Step 03: Tap a merchant to get more details.

Step 04: To manage your payment preferences, tap Manage with [Merchant] to visit their site.

If you can't change or cancel the preauthorized payment on the merchant's site, you can also tap Revoke Payment Authorization to request that the merchant no longer charge your Apple Pay payment method.

Your actual card number is securely stored on your physical device. Apple doesn't store the original card numbers of credit, debit, or prepaid cards that you add to Apple Pay on Apple servers.

Apple Pay never shares your actual card number with merchants. Instead, Apple Pay uses a device-specific account number and a unique transaction code to help process your payments in stores, online, or in apps. This helps protect your information and reduce the risk of fraud.

Apple Pay utilizes security features like Face ID or Touch ID, built into your device's hardware and software. And to use it, you must have a passcode set.

How to view or add your card number in Apple Wallet:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Tap the card you'd like to view, then tap .

Step 03: Tap Card Details, then select Card Information.

Your card number will only be visible if you've previously entered it in full.

Apple Pay is designed to protect your personal information. When you use Apple Pay with a credit, debit, or prepaid card, Apple doesn't retain transaction information that can be tied back to you. And your data isn't sold by Apple to third parties for marketing or advertising.

You can put a hold on or remotely remove cards from Apple Pay when you place your device in Lost Mode, if you've turned on Find My, Apple Support. Placing a hold will only suspend your cards within Apple Pay. Your physical cards remain active and can still be used as normal. This is a good alternative to immediately canceling your cards because if you find your device, you can quickly reenable your cards to use with Apple Pay.

How to put your device in Lost Mode:

Step 01: Open the app on one of your Apple devices.

Step 02: Click or tap Devices.

Step 03: Select the device you've lost.

Step 04: Click or tap Lost Mode, then click or tap Continue.

How to remove your card if your device is lost or stolen:

Step 01: Sign in to your Apple Account.

Step 02: Go to the app, then tap your name.

Step 03: Select the lost device, then tap Remove Items.

Step 04: Call your bank or card issuer.

You can remove cards in the Apple Wallet app, or remotely from any Apple device or web browser by signing in to your Apple ID.

How to remove your card from Apple Pay on iPhone:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Tap the card you want to remove, then tap .

Step 03: Tap Card Details.

Step 04: Tap Remove Card.

If your physical card is lost or stolen, contact your bank or card issuer right away so they can update or replace your card.

When you use your debit or credit card with Apple Pay, your bank or card issuer's fraud protections still apply as they would to your physical card.

In some cases, updated card information is automatically added to Apple Pay, so you may be able to continue using Apple Pay before your new physical card arrives. Availability and timing may vary by bank or issuer.

Apple Pay gives you flexibility at checkout in stores, online, or in apps. You can choose to pay in full or split your purchases into smaller payments over time through an eligible card or installment provider. It's a simple way to pay the way that works for you.

How to apply for a pay later plan at checkout:

Step 01: Choose Apple Pay as your payment method when checking out online or in apps.

Step 02: Tap Other Cards & Pay Later Options.

Step 03: If available, pay later options appear under Additional Pay Later Options. Tap Set Up next to the option you want to use, then follow the on-screen steps.

Returning something you bought with Apple Pay is simple. Most stores will just need your receipt. If you don't have it, the merchant can usually verify your purchase when you hold your device near the reader.

How to make a return with Apple Pay:

Step 01: Open the app on the device that you used to make the purchase.

Step 02: Tap the payment card that you want to be refunded.

Step 03: Double-click the side button and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Finally, hold your device near the contactless reader.

Once the store processes your return, your refund goes back to your payment card automatically. It might take a few days to show up on your statement.

Apple Intelligence enhances order tracking by organizing merchant and tracking details from eligible orders in the Apple Wallet app. Apple Intelligence automatically scans order confirmation and shipping emails in the Mail app to identify key details — such as merchant name, order status, and tracking numbers — making it easy to view delivery updates and payment details in one place.

It even works for purchases not made with Apple Pay. In some cases, you can tap Track with Apple Wallet at checkout online or in supported apps immediately after making a purchase.

How to track an order:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Tap , then tap Orders.

Step 03: Find your order in the list and select it to view its details.

If something doesn't look right, remember that all tracking information comes directly from the merchant — so reach out to them if you have questions or need help with your order.

You can use Apple Pay on Safari and third-party browsers through participating merchants on your Mac, Windows PC, and other devices.

At checkout, just select Apple Pay as your payment method. A QR code will appear — scan it with your iPhone or iPad to securely complete your purchase.

Yes. You can ride public transportation in eligible cities across the world using your iPhone or Apple Watch.

Depending on the eligible transit system, you can add a supported transit card to Wallet to pay for your transit trips, or you can pay using your debit or credit card in Wallet.⁸ It's quick and convenient — just hold your card or device near the reader to pay and go.

Using Apple Pay for public transportation in eligible cities is easy. Depending on where you're riding, you can pay with your usual payment card or each city's local transit card. It makes transit as simple as tap and go.

In many eligible cities worldwide, you can add a transit card to Wallet. Then you can simply tap your iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader and go. To get started, add a supported transit card for your location in the Apple Wallet app.

How to add your transit card to Apple Wallet:

Step 01: Open the  app.

Step 02: Tap , then tap Transit Card.

Step 03: Choose a card from the list, or search by location or card name.

Step 04: Tap Continue, then enter an amount to load onto the card.

If transferring an existing card, tap Transfer Existing Card and enter your card information.

Once your card is added, just hold your iPhone near the reader to pay your fare — no need to unlock your device.

You can also add money to your transit cards anytime directly from your iPhone. It's fast, secure, and easy using your debit or credit cards in Wallet.

If contactless payments are accepted, you can pay for your ride with your credit or debit card using Apple Pay without adding a transit card to the Apple Wallet app.

Simply double-click the side button on your iPhone or Apple Watch to authenticate, then hold your device near the reader and pay, just like you would for any Apple Pay purchase. Or in cities where Express Mode is available, you can just tap and go without unlocking your device.

How to add your debit or credit card to Wallet:

Step 01: Open the app on your iPhone.

Step 02: Tap .

Step 03: Tap Debit or Credit Card, then tap Continue.

Step 04: Hold your iPhone to the middle of the back of your physical card. Keep it in place until the card is read, or tap Enter Card Details Manually.

Express Mode lets you use some of your cards, keys, and passes without waking or unlocking your device, or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. This means you can pay for transportation without unlocking your device in cities where Express Mode is available.

Simply hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader and go.

Express Mode may be enabled by default when you add an eligible card, pass, or key to Apple Wallet. Sometimes, you can even use your card, pass, or key when your device has no charge. You can view and change which card is set to Express Mode at any time in the Wallet & Apple Pay section of the Settings app.

How to enable and use Express Mode on your iPhone:

Step 01: Open the app and select a card, pass, or key.

Step 02: Tap , then Card Details.

Step 03: Tap Express Transit Settings or Express Mode.

Step 04: Select your preferred transit card, payment card, or other compatible pass or key.

Now that it's set up, hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader. When the transaction is successful, a checkmark and Done will appear on your device.

You don't need extra equipment to accept Apple Pay. That's because with Tap to Pay, you only need an iPhone to accept contactless payments. No extra terminal or hardware is required.

If your business accepts credit and debit cards, you can accept Apple Pay. Simply contact your payment provider to get started. And if you already accept contactless payments, you're all set to accept Apple Pay.
